How to learn a new language

Do you want to learn a language in an easy, fast, interesting and effective way? If so, read on, because in this article I'm going to show you the top 3 mistakes of language learners that you should avoid at all cost!

If you avoid these three mistakes alone, you'll become fluent in a new language way more quickly than an average learner. Here they are!

1. Lack of priorities

Learning languages is about a regular work. You can't become fluent in a new language quickly if you don't practice regularly, preferably on a daily basis. Don't waste your time watching TV or using Facebook for a few hours daily - spend at least one, two or three hours learning your target language. People who don't do it aren't fluent in their target language even after a few years of learning it.

2. Learning things that don't matter

Concentrate on the most important things and don't learn things that don't matter. If you don't speak about computers in your native language, don't learn computer vocabulary in your target language. Learn the most important things and don't waste your time learning things that you aren't going to use.

3. Not immersing yourself in your target language

People who try to learn a language in a class have a really hard time learning it. It's not about learning only in a class - it's about using your new language and learning at the same time.

That's it - the top 3 mistakes of language learners. Avoid these mistakes - stop doing things that don't matter, stop learning things that don't matter and stop learning a language only in a class, go and use it.

Good luck and have fun while speaking in English!

Seven Easy Steps to Improve Your Concentration Powers

By: Leon Edward

If you have the willpower you can easily learn the skill of mastering the power of concentration very quickly.

You've heard the saying," If there is a will, there is a way" the same holds true with concentration. Diane Sawyer is a very popular and well-known television news correspondent. When Diane was once asked about what has lead to her professional success, she had only one answer. That answer was being able to paying attention.

So the question still remains, "How do you learn to maintain your focus and enhance your concentration?"

The list below is helpful suggestions to improve your ability to concentrate in the most effective way possible. These tips apply whether you are at school, an important business meeting, at your office busy with work, or if you are just trying to finish a specific
project.

1. Do five more
You are either one of two types of persons in this world. Either you know how to go through and eliminate frustration or you are the type that only wishes they are able to work through it.
So try to concentrate and focus in doing an additional five more things. This type of mantra is best used when you feel like giving up.

An example might be if you are reading or writing and you no longer want to continue to read or write, push yourself to do just five more pages. Complete five more math questions or if you are exercising add and extra five minutes on the treadmill. Remember that athletes build their own physical physiques by pushing themselves to the point of exhaustion, that also helps to develop mentalstamina.

2. Take one step at a time
There may be times when you feel like you are a scatterbrain because your mind is filled with many ideas. Controlling your brain is the key.

Do not worry about lots of matters, priorize tasks and do only those that are needed.
For instance, you cannot help but think of your mounting bill problems and this causes you to quit focusing on your presentation that needs to be done in five minutes. Tell yourself that after the presentation you can then focus on ways to pay off your bills. This gives your mind closure and allows you to focus completely on the presentation.

3. Get tunnel vision
You can actually cup your hands around your eyes and this could serve as a mechanism to tell your mind to stay on task. Case in point: you are in a room and you need to study but there are many distractions preventing you from concentrating. Cupping your hands around your eyes will help your brain to remember to focus and keep it on task.

4. Keep a notepad handy
That way when a thought pops up and distracts your focus, you can write down the thought immediately. By writing it down you effectively get the thought out of your mind. Now you will focus on the job that you need to accomplish at the moment.

5. Take a break
You are not a machine. You may need to take a break to be able to effectively focus on the job that you have to do. You can mange the job more effectively by using breaks to break your tasks it to smaller parts. Try taking a walk outside or go out for lunch.

6. Record your start and end time
When doing work, try to record the time you started and the time that you loss focus.
This helps you know how much time you actually spent doing work and when you began losing your concentration. Being aware of this leads to understanding.

7. Mix up your activities
It is wise to change the activities you do so that you keep your mind alert and not bored.
A bored mind is not completely on its game and will wander. All in all, these activities and suggestions should be practiced regularly to help you to be able to focus and concentrate on the things that really matter most to you.

How to write a good summary

When we write a summary, we reduce a large amount of information to a few sentences. Only major points are included in a summary; details and examples are omitted unless they are essential to the main idea. Connectors show you when important points are introduced (Firstly, Secondly, It is important to note, Finally, etc.). Other connectors can show you where additional details are added (for example, in addition) and are thus not important enough to be included in a summary.

Summaries vary slightly according to the kind of text you have to summarise. A summary of a narrative, for example, would include the main events, when, where and who was involved and why something happened.

Remember: It is important not to change the meaning of the original text. When you write a summary, follow the steps below.

1.Read carefully. Underline the main points: Connectors can help you identify main points.
2.Write out these points in your own words.
3.Review your summary to see if you can reduce it any further.
4.Write out your summary. Check you have used the number of words specified in your composition question.

Every summary should include:

1. An OPENING STATEMENT: All the key things in one sentence (type of text, people, time, and place).

E.g.: In this first chapter (story/ passage/ article/ interview, etc.) Ava falls in love at first sight with ALEX when she sees him at the mail box.

2. KEY ASPECTS in an organized way (name, explain and give examples)

1) Writer and nationality: An American teenager.
2) Main characters (Name, age): Ava-17, Alex-18
3) First meeting

E.g.: Ava is the main character of this American story written by a teenager.

Ava and Alex (who is the other important character in the story) are teenagers as well. They are 17 and 18 respectively.

They see each other at a winter break in December 1964 when Alex is helping his wealthy father move to a new house in a coastal town of New England. Ava is collecting the mail when she first sees Alex. However, it is not until the next day that they talk to each other while taking their dogs out for a walk. Not for long, because Ava’s mom is calling her. But, something has started.

This is a link to the short novel Ava.  You can print it or download it onto your computer. Read a chapter each week and send me the summary by email.
